A set of indicators developed to help forest managers assess and improve their practices

A new set of « forest mitigation » indicators (EFMI – Essential Forest Mitigation Indicators) has been developed by a European project (Horizon Europe – OptFor-EU) to assist forest managers, researchers and policy-makers. These indicators, compiled in a detailed report, aim to more effectively link forest management decisions to climate and ecosystem resilience objectives. They were developed through a collaborative approach bringing together scientists, forestry professionals and elected representatives. This process ensured the relevance, feasibility and applicability of the indicators. Drawing from 130 candidate indicators, the consortium selected a final set of 21 indicators, grouped into 6 broad categories.

Each indicator is described in a summary fact sheet specifying its definition, the data required and its relevance to public policy. Once integrated into the OptFor-EU decision support system, these indicators will be applied at various scales to compare forest management strategies, identify sustainable solutions and support European climate and forest objectives.

In a forthcoming phase, the integration of the indicators into a decision support system will enable forest managers to assess and optimise their practices, thereby contributing significantly to national, European and global objectives for carbon emission reductions. This innovative approach strengthens the interface between science, policy and practice, ensuring that forest ecosystems remain resilient and capable of supporting decarbonisation.
