When will Europe promote sustainable forest management?

This article from Fern explores Continuous Cover Forestry practices in four European countries: Finland, France, Ireland and Latvia. This silvicultural approach, alternative to systematic clear-cutting, favours sustainable forest management which respects ecosystems and combines ecological benefits with financial sustainability.

Nevertheless, the case studies reveal financial and structural obstacles, such as subsidies favouring intensive logging and a lack of training. European policies are needed to encourage forestry practices that promote biodiversity, local communities and climate resilience, while ensuring sustainable income. An urgent overhaul of European funding is deemed essential to make these practices more widespread.
