Peatland for climate

Peatlands play an important role in the global fight against climate change. 30% of the world’s carbon stored in soils is found in peatlands. Yet this habitat covers only 3% of the earth’s land surface. Peatlands are the most efficient carbon sink in the world, far more than all the world’s forests.
A new LIFE project in the Jura and Doubs regions, running from 2022 to 2029, aims to prevent the release of carbon that has been trapped in peat for thousands of years. This project follows on from a LIFE project focusing on biodiversity. Between 2014 and 2022, 55 sites have already been rehabilitated.
