Mais d\u2019o\u00f9 vient-il en for\u00eat ? Bien que pr\u00e9sent en grande quantit\u00e9 dans l\u2019air, il n\u2019existe que peu de plantes foresti\u00e8res capables de fixer directement cet azote atmosph\u00e9rique. Il ne se trouve pas non plus dans les roches. Le cycle de l\u2019azote organique contenu dans le sol constitue la source principale de ce compos\u00e9 essentiel. Les microorganismes d\u00e9composeurs jouent un r\u00f4le fondamental dans ce cycle : ils s\u2019attaquent aux prot\u00e9ines contenues dans la mati\u00e8re organique pour donner de l\u2019ur\u00e9e, elle-m\u00eame transform\u00e9e en ammoniac puis en ammonium. Celui-ci est finalement transform\u00e9 en nitrates par un processus appel\u00e9 nitrification.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 l\u2019automne, les prot\u00e9ines restantes dans les feuilles mortes (et l\u2019azote qu\u2019elles contiennent) sont bloqu\u00e9es par les tanins dans un complexe brun, ce qui permet de les pr\u00e9server solidement pendant la p\u00e9riode hivernale, en plus de tout l\u2019azote stock\u00e9 dans l\u2019humus. Ainsi, rien ne se perd ! Avec le redoux printanier, une lib\u00e9ration progressive de l\u2019azote des feuilles mortes a lieu via l\u2019activit\u00e9 des champignons. Les racines des arbres peuvent donc se remettre \u00e0 fonctionner en absorbant l\u2019azote directement sous forme ammoniacale, avant sa nitrification compl\u00e8te. Ceci permet une r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration quasi int\u00e9grale de l\u2019azote du feuillage tomb\u00e9 l\u2019automne pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent.<\/p>\n<p>En revanche, si une coupe rase a lieu, ce cycle est perturb\u00e9. En effet, les racines ne peuvent plus pomper l\u2019azote sous forme ammoniacale. Sous l\u2019action des microorganismes nitrificateurs, l\u2019azote continue donc sa transformation en nitrates. Malheureusement, ceux-ci sont solubles et facilement lessivables par les pluies printani\u00e8res, avec une perte de stock d\u2019azote du sol forestier. L\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, la ronce peut prendre le dessus en profitant des restes d\u2019apport azot\u00e9 d\u00fb \u00e0 la nitrification. L\u2019ann\u00e9e apr\u00e8s la coupe, en d\u00e9veloppant son syst\u00e8me racinaire, la ronce permet donc une certaine sauvegarde de l\u2019azote restant.
