Le principe \u00e0 la base de cette technologie est relativement simple : \u00e0 partir d\u2019un avion ou d\u2019un h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re, une impulsion laser est \u00e9mise vers la zone d\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat. Ensuite, en fonction de la pr\u00e9sence ou non d\u2019obstacles situ\u00e9s entre l\u2019appareil et le sol, un ou plusieurs \u00e9chos sont renvoy\u00e9s vers le r\u00e9cepteur situ\u00e9 sur l\u2019avion ou l\u2019h\u00e9licopt\u00e8re. Les \u00e9l\u00e9ments de la canop\u00e9e ou tout autre obstacle peuvent ainsi \u00eatre d\u00e9crits en trois dimensions. L\u2019utilisation du LiDAR en for\u00eat permet des applications aussi diverses que vari\u00e9es. \u00c0 titre d\u2019exemple, l\u2019unit\u00e9 de Gestion des Ressources Foresti\u00e8res et des Milieux Naturels de Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech m\u00e8ne actuellement des recherches sur une zone pilote dans la r\u00e9gion de Gedinne. \u00c0 partir des donn\u00e9s r\u00e9colt\u00e9es, la hauteur dominante, le nombre de tiges, la surface terri\u00e8re et le volume par hectare des peuplements peuvent \u00eatre \u00e9valu\u00e9s. Ces estimations permettent d\u00e9j\u00e0 par exemple de d\u00e9tecter les peuplements r\u00e9sineux en retard d\u2019\u00e9claircie. Le syst\u00e8me offre \u00e9galement la possibilit\u00e9 de rep\u00e9rer les trou\u00e9es au sein des massifs forestiers. Celles-ci int\u00e9ressent fortement les gestionnaires \u00e9tant donn\u00e9 qu\u2019elles constituent des zones primordiales en terme de dynamique foresti\u00e8re. Le LiDAR permet aussi de caract\u00e9riser les ripisylves. De mani\u00e8re tr\u00e8s concr\u00e8te, il est possible de relever les infractions li\u00e9es au respect ou non de l\u2019interdiction de maintien de peuplements r\u00e9sineux \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 des cours d\u2019eau. Enfin, la r\u00e9alisation de la cartographie d\u2019occupation du sol \u00e0 l\u2019aide du LiDAR est \u00e9galement d\u2019un grand int\u00e9r\u00eat. La capacit\u00e9 du LiDAR \u00e0 d\u00e9crire en trois dimensions et de mani\u00e8re pr\u00e9cise les milieux naturels ouvre sans conteste des perspectives int\u00e9ressantes et innovantes pour les gestionnaires forestiers. Les applications sont nombreuses et vari\u00e9es et font de cette technologie un outil d\u2019avenir pour la gestion des milieux naturels.
